Spares for Kowa Nitrate MonitorsNormally the only spares required for the Kowa nitrate monitor are the desiccant, which keeps the atmosphere in the optical enclosure dry, and the flow control valve mounted on the front panel. On early machines (pre 1996) the inlet solenoid valve was made of brass and these too occasionally start to leak and need replacing or repairing. When new, the top of the desiccant is bright blue. This gradually turns pinkish as moisture is absorbed. Typically this takes about 9 months when fitted in the optical enclosure. Keep the time between unpacking a new desiccant and fitting it in the optical enclosure to an absolute minimum. Otherwise it will rapidly absorb moisture from the air, which will significantly reduce the time before it needs replacing. Depending on the nature of the water being checked, the flow control valve on the front panel can fail to seal properly when turned off. In some areas the useful life is about two years and in other areas they go on for many years. Any leakage past this valve when it is in the off position will adversely affect accurate recalibration. Similarly the brass bodied inlet solenoid valve on the early instruments can fail to seal. As the failure is due porosity caused by the zinc being removed from the brass, it is normally sufficient to simply replace the brass body. A more expensive alternative is to use a stainless steel replacement body. To the best of our knowledge no stainless steel valve bodies have ever needed replacing. Unfortunately the valves which are used in current instruments will not fit in the space available. We are trying to source a suitable plastic bodied valve to enable instruments to be upgraded.
